Stories from Home

Feeling a little worn down

Weekends are interesting times and sometimes a time for a bit of reflection. The year has been hectic and the end of the week saw a reconsideration of whether I should attend some exercise classes that are in my interests but require an earlier start on Saturday morning. Our weekends have been very busy and this one was to be no exception to the current rule. So, over a lovely round of fish and chips and a little Australian sparkling, on Friday night, I made a decision to withdraw from my favourite class and instructor on Saturday morning. A rest-in, because I wake earlier on a weekend than a weekday, was in order. A little reading of fiction novels that I do not have to think about and can simply escape into for a little while.

So, Saturday morning kicked off a little later with a coffee in town before a visit to the Travel Doctor preparing for our forthcoming trip to Europe – an appointment not to be missed. Having been reading up on the current flu panic, and getting some sensible information rather than the absolutely ridiculous attitude of panic buying for something that is not terribly out of the ordinary, I had ascertained that I am in the higher risk category (high blood pressure and heart disease) although under 50 so that moderated risk slightly. My risk factor of getting it, let alone dying from it, is 0.04% and I am at risk so people, STOP for the love of all that is sensible, panicking because you are doing no one, least of all yourself because you look like an arse, any favours and the media, you can STOP reporting this puerile behaviour.

Anyways, I have digressed long enough. Mooching around the city we found a couple of things to add to our travel kit (a gorillapod and incidentals) then caught up with a very dear friend with whom we share travel stories and whom we have unintentionally stalked on the last 2 trips she has done. We have now cleared the air and made sure that the next trip will not follow her next path which is the beautiful alps of Switzerland. I anticipate that we will decide our next round of adventure on the flight back from Europe at the end of April. Back to the story…we savoured some lovely Italian pucka tucker at Jamie’s Italian before sampling a little gelato, of which we shall have much more in about a month’s time.

After offloading some kangaroo pouches and saying farewell to our dear friend, it was home for a lovely quiet night in with a movie and beverage. Sunday arrived, as had Saturday, with the beautiful warble of magpie, a sound I absolutely love. Geared up for professional development, I stop to do some more reconsidering – do I still want to be a marriage celebrant? I take time to reflect on why I became one and where I am at. I love marrying people but I am not that interested in working up a business and spending the time I need for rejuvenation, working. I do not love people that much, nor do I wish to spend my weekends committed to others so, when it comes time to pay my next round of registration and membership fees, me thinks me shall decline in favour of sewing medieval and Georgian outfits and participating in similar madcap activities.

To round out the weekend, I forego a trip to a music hall to see Things of Stone and Wood. I have scaled my weekend back. I have a commitment to meet in relation to my sister, which will take considerable time and personal resources. I need to look at how I am travelling as we gear towards our first solid break in 18 months. The year is racing past at a phenomenal rate of knots. I am already very tired and we are only about 10 weeks in. I am also over-tired of sadly ignorant human behaviour. It brings things home when a dental hygienist tells me that they cannot get face masks to do their job and are being rationed by suppliers. Let’s make less ignorant and more informed decisions, let’s look at the news more and read independently. Let’s just be nice human beings that look out for each other a little more. Thank you for your time as I have a little rant. Cheers and here’s to a better week.

What do you think?
